Plutarch's original formulation: the Athenians preserved Theseus's ship by replacing rotting planks one at a time. Eventually every plank was new. The ship in the harbor looked identical. But was it the same ship? Two millennia of philosophers have wrestled with this. The reason it matters now: gradient descent does the same thing to neural networks. Every training step replaces planks. Every fine-tune swaps timber.

Aristotle distinguished material cause from formal cause. The wood is material. The ship-shape is formal. Replace all the wood — the form persists, so identity persists. This is the argument every AI company implicitly makes: the architecture is the same, the weights just got better. The problem: Aristotle had no concept of distribution shift. Form can persist while function drifts catastrophically.

Locke said identity is continuity of consciousness — memory links past-self to present-self. Parfit went further: identity is not what matters. What matters is psychological continuity and connectedness. For AI, this maps to: does the model's behavior connect meaningfully to the behavior you validated? Parfit would say the question is wrong. The engineering says: the question is the only thing that matters, because liability attaches to identity.

This is the structural reason AI governance frameworks keep failing. They assume identity is stable. It is not.
