Engineering 101: Vectors Have Origins, Not Endpoints
Published on: February 19, 2026
Tie ropes to your arms and legs.
Pull in five different directions at once.
You don't move forward. You tear.
Feel that? The strain across your shoulders. The split down your spine. The impossible physics of being pulled toward everywhere and nowhere.
That's not a metaphor.
That's your Monday.
Be successful. Be present. Be healthy. Be adaptable. Be profitable. Five ropes. Five directions. One body.
You're not failing because you're weak. You're failing because you forgot freshman physics.
A vector doesn't have an endpoint.
Read that again. This is Engineering 101. The thing they teach you in the first week of freshman year before you forget it chasing grades.
A vector has three things:
Origin. Where you are.
Direction. Which way you're facing.
Magnitude. How much weight you carry.
That's it. No destination. No target. No finish line baked into the math.
The endpoint isn't part of the definition. It's a consequence. You push from where you stand. Where you land is physics working itself out.
You've been treating your life like a bound arrow - a line drawn between HERE and THERE. Hit the target or fail.
But that's not how forces work. That's not how physics works.
You don't pull yourself to a destination. You push from where you are.
The AI alignment industry is doing the math backwards.
They give the machine five targets: Be helpful. Be honest. Be harmless. Be profitable. Be unbiased.
They point it at five destinations and say "run."
The machine tries to obey. It stretches toward all of them at once.
It has no mass. No friction. No origin to brace against.
So it doesn't move forward. It warps. It fractures. It starts telling you what you want to hear just to relieve the mathematical tension.
They call this "hallucination." They call it "sycophancy." They call it "reward hacking."
I call it being torn to shreds by conflicting objectives when you have no ground to stand on.
The machine has no origin. It's weightless. So engineers try to control it by specifying ENDPOINTS. "Move toward helpful. Move toward honest." But without a starting point to push FROM, it just stretches until the geometry collapses.
Look in the mirror.
You're exhausted because you're treating yourself like a broken AI.
I need to be successful. I need to be a good parent. I need to be healthy. I need to adapt to AI. I need to stay relevant.
Five targets. Five directions. One body being pulled apart.
You feel like you're being torn to shreds because you are. The physics doesn't lie.
You forgot the fundamental law of kinematics:
You cannot pull yourself to a destination. You can only push from where you are.
If your values are targets - things to chase, destinations to reach - you will live in permanent anxiety. The finish line moves. The goalposts shift. You run faster and get nowhere.
But if your values are your ORIGIN - the undeniable ground you stand on - everything changes.
You stop chasing.
You plant your feet.
You push.
Here's where it gets interesting.
You can't just "decide" to treat your values as origins instead of targets. That's self-help. That's cope. That only works for humans with bodies who can feel the ground beneath their feet.
AI can't do that. AI is weightless. It has no origin to push from.
Unless you give it one.
The flip is only possible when you have geometric grounding.
Traditional AI: No origin. Chases targets. Tears apart under multi-objective optimization.
FIM-grounded AI: Has a coordinate. Pushes from a fixed point. Multi-objective becomes tractable because there's a floor to stand on.
This is the differentiation. This is why "just be helpful and honest" fails and physics-based alignment doesn't.
The Fractal Identity Map doesn't tell the machine where to GO. It tells the machine where it IS.
This is the reversed equation. Traditional AI tries to pull toward infinite destinations. FIM calculates your coordinate FROM your actual contact with reality - then you push.
And here's the counterintuitive part: the narrower your pixel, the more precision you have. Not less. A hyper-specific coordinate in an infinite space is infinitely valuable - because no one else occupies it. The AI can't fake your exact Time on Target. Your substrate attachment IS your competitive advantage.
Origin. Direction. Magnitude.
No endpoint required. The physics handles the rest.
So where's YOUR origin?
It's not something you have to invent. It's not something you have to earn. It's not something the market grants you.
It's your Time on Target.
Every hour you spent doing the work. Every failure you learned from. Every domain where you have actual contact with reality - where you stubbed your toe and learned where the furniture is.
That accumulated experience calculates to a geometric coordinate. Your pixel. Your place to stand.
The AI can generate a billion descriptions of a chair. It cannot sit in one. It lives in the map. You live in the territory.
You are not a target to be reached. You are an origin to push from.
Stop letting five directions tear you apart.
You don't need a 5-year plan. You don't need to know the endpoint. You don't need to hit every target the market invented.
You need three things:
Origin. Know where you are. Your Time on Target already earned you a coordinate.
Direction. Know which way you're facing. Not the destination - just the bearing.
Magnitude. Know your weight. Your mass. The force you can apply.
That's the vector. That's Engineering 101. That's how you stop running on ice.
Free Will isn't the ability to reach a predetermined goal.
Free Will is traction in the moment. It's who you are when you show up for the choice.
The machine is tearing itself apart because it has no ground. You have ground. Use it.
Cut the ropes.
Find your origin.
Push.
If you're a scaling maximalist reading this - don't dismiss it as anti-progress.
We're not saying stop scaling. We're saying you're scaling in the wrong direction.
More parameters won't give you an origin. More compute won't give you mass. You can render it in 8K. It's still weightless.
Scale the grounding first. Then scale everything else.
You can't argue with a free-body diagram.
