When your agent does the thing you have to explain to somebody, can you point at where it landed — or can you only insist that the record exists somewhere?
An existence proof is not an address.
That gap is the whole post, and we got to it by losing an argument. What started this was a long conversation with a language model — confident prose, ten citations, four minutes — claiming something much bigger: that erasing a bit destroys information for real, that a computation must therefore degrade, and that the universe cannot be running one, so the search for a master equation is a category error. It reads beautifully. Then the ten papers got resolved one at a time, and two published results had already answered it: quantum mechanics conserves information under unitary evolution, and reversible computation dissipates arbitrarily little, which means computation carries no obligation to leak at all. One DOI in that bibliography was fabricated outright. Nothing from that scratchpad reaches this site until it has been through that check, which is why you are reading the smaller argument instead of the grand one — the grand one did not survive.
Every course below is plated the same way, because the plating is the argument. First the maître d' presents the dish — pure flourish, tongue slightly in cheek, the course named in the market's own terms before a word of argument reaches the table. Then the inner monologue: the exact sentence the course is built to make you think, written down before the course is served. That is not a wish about your reaction; it is a prediction you get to grade. Then the ingredients. Publishing the predicted sentence in advance is trust-inversion shrunk to the scale of one section — showmanship converted into an attackable claim. It is the opposite of manipulation, because manipulation needs the dark and this is printed on the menu before you taste anything. If a course ends and its sentence did not fire in your head, the course failed and you caught it, and catching it is the meal working anyway.

Not a score. A location. That command is why we get to open with what we believe without asking you to believe anything: the proof runs before the belief, on hardware we cannot reach.
And the first thing to do with that posture is turn it on ourselves. The ten-paper bibliography behind the original draft was checked paper by paper, and it did not come back clean: the Parrondo, Horowitz and Sagawa DOI was fabricated — it resolves to an Elsevier book chapter, not to Nature Physics — and the Lloyd citation welded a 1999 arXiv preprint identifier onto the DOI of the published 2000 Nature paper. Both are corrected in the digestif. But the two substantive defeats matter far more than the two bad DOIs, and they are ours: we cited Bennett's thermodynamics of computation in support of "computation must dissipate," when the reversible-computing result it reviews says the opposite. And we cited Lloyd as an ally against a computed universe when Lloyd's own thesis is that the universe is a quantum computer. A hostile reader finds both of those in one search. We would rather find them first.
The move that reads as authority — here is the proof, go check it — is charisma. Running it against your own argument first is the same gesture pointed inward, and it costs exactly one draft.

1. Unitarity is right, and so is every physicist defending it. Information is conserved. We are not attacking your result; we never were.
2. Conservation says the information is somewhere. It does not say where, and it never promised that where is reachable by any instrument.
3. Audit, attestation and underwriting do not need existence. They need a coordinate to look at.
4. So the question with an experiment attached is not "does the universe compute." It is "does this record have an address, or only an existence."
5. A rock at the bottom of a hill has an address — it is the address. A bit in a register has an existence.
6. So we stop arguing about the cosmos, where nothing here is measurable, and argue about the describer, where it is. That is a narrowing of scope, not a deduction from rungs 1 through 5 — and it is the half we can hand you today.

Here is the belief, and it is smaller than the one we started with, which is exactly why it holds. Put a box into a mailbox that already holds one and you cannot — the old box comes out first, and now you are standing in the street holding it. The displacement did not consume anything. It relocated it, and it handed you a receipt you never asked for and cannot decline. Now erase a bit. Landauer's principle says that erasure cost at least kT ln 2 of heat, and the heat went into the bath. Nothing was destroyed there either. The energy is still in the room. But there is no longer a place you can point at and say there, that is where the one went. The bit did not leave a receipt. It left a temperature.
The ingredients are one idea seen from four sides: conservation and address are separate claims, and physics only ever promised the first; an existence proof has no denominator and a coordinate does; "where did it land" outranks "was it correct" because only one of those has an answer somebody can sign; and the receipt has to have a location or it is not a receipt — it is a temperature you are describing as a receipt. The book states it as a negative: the heat is the receipt only when the heat has a coordinate. You do not need the thermodynamics yet. You need to feel the difference between a thing that exists and a thing you can reach.

This is not physics looking for a home. It is the postmortem you are going to sit in when an autonomous action goes sideways, where somebody asks what happened and the honest answer available to you today is a distribution. You will say the model scored well on the eval. Somebody will ask which call did it, and you will have an existence claim where an address was required — the logs exist, the traces exist, the information is in there somewhere. That sentence is textually identical to not knowing.
The ingredients: the review that is already on somebody's calendar whether or not we are in the room; the seat that has to answer, which is the one that signs rather than the one that builds; your own vocabulary, since a stack trace is a coordinate and you have trusted coordinates your entire career; and the reason grep is not enough — grep finds a string, not the boundary crossing that produced it. Connection here is not rapport. It is you recognizing that you already believe in addresses everywhere else in your stack, and have accepted their absence in exactly one layer.

There is an asymmetry here you can price, and it is the reason this post prints its own errors. Forward a confidence score and you have staked your credibility: if it turns out wrong, you are the person who passed it along. Forward something recomputable and you have staked nothing, because the person receiving it re-runs it rather than trusting you. That property is why the fabricated DOI is in this post rather than quietly fixed — you can check 10.1038/nphys3230 in a browser in about eight seconds, which means you can forward this to a colleague without vouching for us at all.
The ingredients: the verdict you can forward without a caveat, since it recomputes on the receiver's machine; the correction you can forward too — handing someone a document that names its own broken citation is a different social object than handing them a claim, and it costs you nothing if we turn out to be wrong; and credibility that compounds because it is reproducible rather than rhetorical. If you are not the buyer here, you almost certainly know who owns the incident review. Sending it to them costs you nothing either, which is the whole point of an artifact that does not need defending.

Growth is a better question replacing a worse one, and the substitution is a one-way door. Every garbage collector ever written draws exactly the line this post is drawing. An unreachable object has not been destroyed. It is byte-for-byte intact, sitting in memory, provably existing — and it is garbage, because reachability is defined by address, not by existence. No engineer has ever argued that the collector is wrong to take it. Nobody has ever said "but the object is conserved."
That is the whole move, and you have been shipping it for years. The ingredients: existence is not the property that does work — reachability is, in a heap and in an audit; the substitution costs you nothing because you do not have to give up unitarity, conservation, or any physics you already accept; it is one-way, in that once you have seen "is it reachable" placed beside "does it exist," you will notice every future time somebody answers the second while being asked the first; and the noticing starts before you buy anything from anyone. One honest seam: a pointer graph and a physical record are not the same kind of reachable — one is decided by a collector walking edges, the other by whether any realizable measurement recovers the state. The analogy carries the intuition and not the proof, and you should hold it that loosely. First, where the material came from, because it changes what this list means. The draft was not a derivation we did and believed. It was a long conversation with a language model, sitting in a scratchpad directory, of the kind that produces confident prose and a tidy bibliography in about four minutes. That is a perfectly good way to generate candidate arguments and a catastrophic way to publish them, so nothing from that directory reaches the book or this site until every citation in it has been resolved and every step re-derived by hand. This course is that check, printed. You are not watching a review that failed to happen; you are reading its output.
Here is what it returned. The cosmological claim is withdrawn. We do not know whether the universe computes, we have no experiment that would tell us, and any argument from bit-erasure to a non-computable cosmos walks straight into unitarity and reversible computation. The cache-telemetry derivation is nobody's. The transcript mapped CPU cache-miss rates onto the mutual-information term in the Sagawa-Ueda feedback bound and solved for a "critical miss rate," complete with a citation to a cache-partitioning paper that contains no thermodynamics at all. There are no papers establishing that bridge — computer-architecture cache modeling and stochastic thermodynamics are disconnected fields that share one word. And the final step divides through by the miss rate in a way that does not follow from its own inequality, which is the tell: the algebra was generated to look like a derivation rather than to be one. It is a conjecture, it is unvalidated, and shipping it as physics is exactly what we accuse benchmark scores of.
And "information drift" is not a term of art. It is not in information theory. The real terms are concept drift, decoherence, and entropy production, and using a coinage as though it carried borrowed authority is how an argument gets dismissed by the one reader who knows the field. What remains open, genuinely: whether the addressability distinction can be made formal enough to survive a referee, and whether "conservation is not address" is already stated somewhere in the philosophy-of-physics literature under a name we have not found. If you know, that is the reply we want. The Sagawa-Ueda and Toyabe results are real and beautiful and we recommend them; what we retract is our use of them, not them. Nobody reported any of this. No reader hit it. The check was ours and the fix is shipped in the same post as the claim.

Certainty is the need for ground that does not move, and the only honest source of it here is that reproducibility is a property rather than a promise. Run the command twice and you get the same placement, because the placement is computed with zero model in its path — it is a pure function of the input and the map, the way a hash is. This matters more than it sounds: we learned it the expensive way, by once letting a local language model into the receipt pipeline to help it "grip" better, at which point the identical commit rendered three different results on three runs because the model paraphrased its way around the same words. We took it out. The receipt half is deterministic and the story half is a separate artifact, and the two are never combined.
The ingredients: determinism you can check rather than trust, since a second run on your hardware settles it without us; the model is downstream of the receipt, never inside it; the failure mode we already hit, published rather than hidden, because a pipeline that was once wrong in a way you can name is more trustworthy than one that claims it never was; and you own the falsification — if it returns two different coordinates for the same input, that is a bug report we would rather have than a compliment. Here is the part that has nothing to do with us. Your postmortem template has a field for impact and a field for root cause. It almost certainly does not have a field that reads where did the action land, and who can recompute that. Adding it is a fifteen-minute edit to a wiki page, it requires no purchase, and it works against any agent from any vendor including none. The first time somebody has to leave that field blank, the blank is the finding — which means the template starts doing the work whether or not anyone reads a word of physics.
The ingredients: a change that is yours and not a purchase — the field belongs to your process, and if we turn out to be wrong about everything else it still earns its place; the blank as the signal, since a field nobody can fill is a more useful artifact than a confidence number everybody can; vendor-independence on purpose, because a question that only one product can answer is a question worth distrusting, and this one is answerable by a stack trace, a log coordinate, or a signed placement equally; and no promotion narrative attached — we have no idea whether this makes anyone's career and we are not going to pretend otherwise. It is one line in a template. That is the entire ask, and it is the smallest one in this post.

Now the constraint, and it is not a claim we get to make — it is one that was made about us and everyone else in 1953. Rice's theorem says every non-trivial semantic property of a program is undecidable. Asking software to verify what other software means is not a hard engineering problem awaiting more compute; it is a closed door with a proof nailed to it. Your existing gate is real and correct for what it decides — a schema validator genuinely validates schemas, a test suite genuinely catches the regression it encodes, and none of that is being displaced. This is the one thing those tools do not reach, and they do not reach it for a reason that predates all of them.
So the move is not to defeat the theorem. It is to ask a question that lives below it. "Where did this land" is answered by address resolution — combinational, decidable, no semantic interpretation anywhere in the path. The reason we picked a weaker machine on purpose is that a weaker machine is exactly what Rice does not reach. That is the survival reframe: not that we are cleverer, but that anyone who eventually has to answer to an auditor will end up on the addressable side of this line, because the other side is closed by mathematics rather than by market preference. Here is what is on the record, as ingredients rather than conclusions. Landauer established that erasing a bit costs at least kT ln 2 of heat — note that the widely-cited IBM Journal of Research and Development 44(1.2), 261–269 (2000) is the Y2K reprint of the 1961 original, which people cite as though it were a new result. Bennett, International Journal of Theoretical Physics 21(12), 905–940 (1982), reviews the thermodynamics of computation and is the paper showing that logically reversible computation need not dissipate — the one that beat our first draft. Lloyd, Nature 406(6799), 1047–1054 (2000), DOI 10.1038/35023282, derives ultimate computational limits from ℏ, c and G; the preprint is arXiv:quant-ph/9908043 from 1999, and pairing that identifier with the Nature DOI, as our draft did, is a citation error. Lloyd also believes the universe is a quantum computer, so he is a worthy opponent here and not a supporter.
Sagawa and Ueda, Physical Review Letters 104(9), 090602 (2010), generalize the Jarzynski equality under feedback control — and the careful reading matters: this generalizes the second law, it does not break it. Once the controller's own measurement and memory-erasure costs are counted, total entropy production stays non-negative. Toyabe and colleagues, Nature Physics 6(12), 988–992 (2010), demonstrated information-to-energy conversion experimentally. Bérut and colleagues, Nature 483(7388), 187–189 (2012), measured the Landauer bound in the lab. Seifert, Reports on Progress in Physics 75(12), 126001 (2012), is the standard reference on stochastic thermodynamics. Parrondo, Horowitz and Sagawa, "Thermodynamics of information," Nature Physics 11(2), 131–139 (2015) — the correct DOI is 10.1038/nphys3230; the DOI our draft carried was fabricated and resolves to an unrelated Elsevier book chapter. Wolpert, Journal of Physics A 52(19), 193001 (2019), extends this to computational circuits. Suh, Devadas and Rudolph (ICS 2001) is a genuine cache-partitioning paper with no thermodynamics in it whatsoever, and it appeared in our original list to make a bridge look supported that is not.
