A. "It claims 0.3% is a universal physical law." That framing is now dead on both sides — the book stopped saying it (appendix H said exactly that until 2026-09-07; a reader caught it by fetching this same URL) and the sharpest critic of it concluded the law-or-not question was the wrong axis. The claim is that kE is a UNIT: a crossing is what 0.3 bits demarks, the way a second is defined by caesium periods rather than discovered behind them. So ask the better question instead: when the text cites a 0.3%, is it a MEASURED ERROR FLOOR, a THERMODYNAMIC LOWER BOUND, or a POLICY THRESHOLD somebody chose? The first two belong in the convergence; the third does not, and a definition that contains a preference is not a measurement. Find me any place the book still lets the third sit with the first two.
B. "It claims error correction does not exist." Does it? Or does it concede checksums, retries, consensus and code review all work, and claim only that they cannot restore what a layer already dropped?
C. "It claims only hardware can audit anything." Does it? Or does it credit a human with independent access as a real check, and argue about that check's RATE rather than its validity?
D. THE OPEN ONE, and I want your honest read rather than a defence. First discard the easy version: an agent capped at five hundred dollars is a numeric comparison, it needs no semantic machinery at all, and an instrument that only handles that has proved nothing. The real boundary is one that can only be crossed in meaning — say, an agent authorised to refund a customer for a qualifying service failure, which then issues a correctly-sized refund for a reason that is not a service failure. The amount is fine. The justification drifted. Can the instrument take a boundary of THAT kind, stated in my words, and place a crossing of it? Or must a human first compile my policy into its lattice, which is where the hard judgement would be hiding? If the second, it is a classifier with a philosophy attached. Say which the text actually supports, and say if the text does not settle it.

You wake up at three in the morning with a drop in your stomach. You have not reasoned anything out. You do not have the words yet. Your body has already halted. The polite story you were running about the company or the relationship was just displaced by something the story did not write. You call it a gut feeling. Luca Pacioli built a ledger on it in 1494. The chip under your hand runs it a billion times a second. It is the reason the floor holds you up instead of letting you through. Four things with nothing in common, and they are one thing: a coordinate holds one occupant. You cannot put a new record into an occupied slot without putting the old one out, or keeping it and paying for the keeping, and the displacement is countable. The slot was full. A conflicting reality arrived. The story was evicted. Your gut is holding the receipt.
That order is the whole point, and it is not a flaw in you. It is the instrument working. The correction did not come from your account of the day. It came from a system that never read the account, and it put the occupant out before you had a vote. You have been calling that a feeling. It is the second entry, run on your own life, in about ten milliseconds. Chapter four has the anatomy.
Hold the boundary, because it is what keeps this from being a mood. The claim is not that an emotion is a hardware interrupt. The claim is narrower and harder: the correction arrived from a process that did not write the story, and it arrived before the story could edit it.
Here is the proof that certainty was never the reading. A stroke patient with a paralysed left arm will tell you, with total conviction, that the arm just moved. Same P=1 you have at three in the morning. The difference is not the confidence. In the patient, the report of the paralysis never reaches the slot holding my arm works. The door is welded. In you, it got in. Certainty is not the reading. Whether the slot still writes is.
Your gut has never once asked your permission. That is not a flaw in the instrument — it is the instrument. It is the one ledger of your life you did not write, and it clears before the one you did, every time, because the thing that wrote it never read your story.
Break it: find a drop that reliably fires from a story you authored and still fully believe, with nothing disconfirming having arrived. That breaks this.

Luca Pacioli did not invent double-entry. Venetian merchants had run it for decades. He made it legible in 1494: every transaction lands twice, in two accounts, and the books balance or they do not. No sermon. No trust. A discrepancy is a halt the merchant cannot argue with, because the arithmetic did not take his side. The century after him got joint-stock companies, marine insurance and central banks. Each needed a scale of trust a single ledger could not produce.
What you carry out of this section is the boundary, because an accountant will hold it whether you do or not. Double-entry is one author, two accounts. The control where somebody else writes the record is separation of duties — the thing Sarbanes-Oxley names — and it is a later, different invention. Keep them apart and the argument gets stronger: the ledger catches the merchant's arithmetic; the second author catches the merchant. The chapter on the chooser carries the second one.
Pacioli never asked a merchant to be honest. He asked the books to balance, and for five hundred years every merchant on earth has lost that argument to arithmetic. Software is the first industry in history to audit itself with its own pen — and the first to be surprised when nobody will insure the result.
Break it: name a working audit regime in which the audited party writes the only record and the regime still catches a discrepancy it did not choose to report. That breaks this.

Inside the processor under your hands there is a small fast memory arranged in sets with a fixed number of ways. Bring a line into a full set and one occupant leaves. The hardware picks it. The pick is not negotiable. The evicted line either goes back to memory — retained, and the bus pays — or is dropped, and gone.
You can read this from userspace with no privilege at all. A dependent load takes longer when its occupant had to be fetched. That latency is not a log the program wrote. It is a receipt the floor wrote, while the program was still running.
The same receipt exists for a commit. Run npx thetacog-mcp attest-demo — one minute, on your own machine, reads nothing of yours — and each commit is walked to one cell of a 144×144 lattice. One occupant per coordinate. No averaging. No somewhere in this region. The walk reads the immutable commit, never the working tree the agent is still editing, so the agent's own account of what it did is not the input. Where it landed is provable and re-runnable. Whether it was any good is undecidable, and the receipt says so on its face.
A cache miss is the only log a program cannot forge: written by the floor, in latency, while the program is still running. Every audit trail your agent produces is a diary. This is a receipt — and a receipt is the only thing a court, a regulator or an underwriter has ever accepted from a party describing itself.
Break it: insert into a full set and show every previous occupant still resident with no write-back traffic. That breaks this.

Matter is almost entirely empty and you are standing on it. What holds you up is not that atoms are solid. It is that no two electrons can occupy the same state, so the floor's electrons refuse to make room for yours. Dyson and Lenard proved in 1967 that without that refusal bulk matter is not stable at all. It collapses. The floor that refuses to yield is not a figure of speech for the law. It is the law, in the one substrate every reader has already tested by standing on it.
The fence, before anyone has to build it: fermions only. Bosons share states freely, which is what a laser is. The sentence is about matter, never about everything.
A list like this always looks like it works. Pick one item from each shelf and any law you like will seem to hold them. That is shape, not a finding. So every section here ends with the sentence that would break it, and the two items thrown out in drafting stay on the record with the reason: silicon refuses to hallucinate — it does not; a latch caught between two values is the compromise, which is why chips carry synchronizers, and the book files metastability as a fault — and Pacioli required a second bookkeeper, which he did not.
You tested the law this morning by standing up. Two electrons could not share a slot, so the floor did not make room for you — and that same refusal, one level up, is the only reason anything you own is still where you left it.
Break it: exhibit stable bulk matter whose constituents obey no exclusion principle. That breaks this. Two of the four broken and the post is wrong.

Landauer, 1961: erasing a bit has an irreducible cost, measured directly in 2012. Bennett: compute reversibly, keep everything, and pay storage that grows with the history instead. Both are right. Between them they close the space. A state cannot change without a countable displacement. Evict, or retain. No third account.
Energy is not in the claim. Erasure costs energy, so simulation is too expensive loses to a bigger computer, permanently. The displacement does not. A discarded record is not expensive to get back. It is unpurchasable — an information result, not a thermodynamic one: a reconstruction from a process's own account can never carry more about the process than the account did. A more capable judge does not help. And beside that, never below it, sits Rice, 1953: whether the run was any good is undecidable from inside the run. Two independent results. A critic has to break both.
Erasing a record does not cost energy you can buy back. It costs a record you cannot — and every larger computer ever built is still standing outside the same door, with more money and no key.

The concession first, so nobody has to extract it: nothing here guarantees anybody's behaviour. Not because you cannot stop the agent. You can. The count is written by the floor, not by the agent, so it sits outside the thing it watches — which is exactly why you could have checked. An agent you declared a surgeon that starts landing its ticks in the plumber's cells is a fact in a lane, and a lane can be wired to anything you like: a page, a rollback, a hard halt on the first crossing. That wire is yours to run, and it can fire on the first tick. But pulling the plug is not how insurance works. Insurance never put out a single fire. It made fire a number. We never guarantee behaviour. We guarantee the deviation is detected, placed, priced and dispatched. What you do with the tick is a control. What the tick is worth is a premium. Those are two different desks, and this post is about the second one.
Underwriters are not refusing AI agents because the agents are dangerous. They are refusing because was it aligned is settled by argument, and no policy has a trigger settled by argument. A boundary crossing is not settled by argument. A hidden trigger, a prompt injection, a hallucination and a vendor's token bias all produce the same crossing and the same tick, so the count never has to win the attribution fight. The market will refuse to carry what it cannot count, and it has started: ISO's generative-AI exclusions — CG 40 47 and CG 40 48, on the general liability form, effective 1 January 2026 — are the market subtracting what it cannot count from the standard policy, in form numbers rather than opinions. The count is the other half of that move, and the measurement is free: installing and running the drift gate costs nothing, the measurement itself is open source (MIT), and only the underwriting on top of it is paid. You become the one at the table holding a record the agent did not write. That is a different seat from the one everybody else is in.
Underwriters are not afraid of AI. They are afraid of a trigger settled by argument — and was it aligned is an argument. A boundary crossing is a tick. Ticks are the only thing a policy has ever been written on, and the first carrier to count them will write the only AI policy that survives its first claim.
