📝 Why Reality Needs Friction Not Code
The sticky note that says 72 and the cold room, math as a shadow and not the furnace, and an AI that drifts when it reads only its own logs.
❌ What the errata show
This is the only one of the three that lands back on the agent: an AI reading its own logs drifts out of touch, the sticky-note point exactly. Then it resolves the drift with “hardware friction” and “only active physical work enforces the boundaries”, where our draft resolves it with a record the agent did not write.
❌ Errata, line by line
- “True stability absolutely demands a physical boundary, like actual hardware friction or real-world delivery.” 01:14The draft’s anchor is a reading the agent did not author: recomputed from the commit, placed against a lane declared before it ran. Real-world delivery is that kind of reading; friction in the metal is the thermostat’s version, not ours.grounds the claim in metal or friction instead of a record the actor did not write · settled by CLAUDE.md AXIOM 0 (FORBIDDEN: hardware because it runs on metal) · AXIOM 1 W3
- “At the end of the day, computation merely records history, but only active physical work enforces the boundaries of reality.” 01:21A record does not hold the line, and we never say ours does. What the record does is let someone else see where the work landed, so the person who owns the halt can pull it.makes the tape a brake: kill switch, failed build, forced boundary · settled by CLAUDE.md TAPE, NOT BRAKE, NOT ENGINE
✅ Said right, quoted as said
- “Take your thermostat at home. Writing 72 degrees on a sticky note isn't going to magically heat up a room, right?” 00:29
- “Math casts a shadow, but it isn't the furnace.” 00:35
- “If it only looks at its internal logs, it's going to silently drift completely out of touch with reality.” 01:09
✏️ Nearly right, and the line we would sign
- “If a software system isn't anchored to physical friction, is it actually controlling anything at all or just hallucinating its own success?” 01:28→ If the only evidence a system has is the record it wrote itself, is it controlling anything, or reading its own success back?the anchor is a record the agent did not write, recomputed from the commit; friction is the thermostat’s anchor, not ours
