The claim is that kE is a UNIT: a crossing is what 0.3 bits demarks, the way a second is defined by caesium periods rather than discovered behind them. So ask the better question instead: when the text cites a 0.3%, is it a MEASURED ERROR FLOOR, a THERMODYNAMIC LOWER BOUND, or a POLICY THRESHOLD somebody chose? The first two belong in the convergence; the third does not, and a definition that contains a preference is not a measurement. Find me any place the book still lets the third sit with the first two.
B. "It claims error correction does not exist." Does it? Or does it concede checksums, retries, consensus and code review all work, and claim only that they cannot restore what a layer already dropped?

The amount is fine. The justification drifted. Can the instrument take a boundary of THAT kind, stated in my words, and place a crossing of it? Or must a human first compile my policy into its lattice, which is where the hard judgement would be hiding? If the second, it is a classifier with a philosophy attached. Say which the text actually supports, and say if the text does not settle it.

There is a room you have not walked into. You know which one. Your stomach named it before you did. The carrier who would price you. The investor who does not care how the code works. The person who looks like they have no skill and sits at the top anyway. You told yourself the work will be discovered, and you shipped again. That room is your shadow, and the shadow has an address: a place in your own commit log where nothing ever landed. Your own account of the week cannot show it to you, because your account is what pushed it out. A record you did not write can, and this one did. Seventeen days: 2,147 commits, 9,461 emails to 776 addresses, one lunch on hold, one call never confirmed. The story has three acts. The fog, where most of your energy went to arguing about what the data meant and that arguing was branded as the work. Jeffrey Pfeffer has been asked why people do not have power, in his own count, about a billion times. His answer in the Stanford GSB talk from 2010 is one sentence: we are our own biggest barrier to having power. Then he lists the parts, and every part is a room you have felt your feet refuse. You will not make the trade-off. You want to be liked by everyone, so you do nothing, because — his line — the nice thing about being dead in the water is that no one could complain about the direction. You are counterdependent: you do not like being told what to do, so you reject the hierarchy and then wonder why the hierarchy never hands you anything. You believe the world is fair, so you assume the people who play it badly will get it in the end, and you stop watching them, which is exactly when they take the room.
And the last one, the one that costs the most: you spend your weekend with your close friends. Pfeffer used to ask his Monday class how they spent it, and the class thought he was a fool for asking. His point was Granovetter's (1973): the useful ties are the weak ones, because your friends travel in your circle and carry the information you already hold. Redundant information, at a full weekend's cost. The lunch you need is with the person you do not want to have lunch with. Your stomach knows that name. It flagged it the moment you read the sentence.
Now the fog, which is the same barrier in a different room. Think of the last quarter and count the hours that went to what does this number mean, why did the model drift, whose fault was the failure. That was most of the energy, and it was called the work. It was not the work. It was the tax on ambiguity, paid per argument, and the reason it felt like effort is that stumbling is tiring. Measuring the entropy is not the fog; a reading with its null beside it is discovery, and it is the cheapest thing on the page. The fog is the second hour of the same argument after the number was already on disk. The ratchet in this repo has one house rule against that tax and it is the plainest one: no naked readings — every number on disk is stored with how it was measured, what it was compared against, and how many observations it rests on, so there is nothing left to argue about except the target. Put your hand on the barrier. It is not out there. It is the list of rooms you enter and the list of arguments you have instead of entering them, both of which are in your record, and the record is readable.
Being liked by everyone and being dead in the water are the same coordinate. Nobody can complain about the direction of a boat that is not moving, and nobody can price it either.

So on 17 September I ran the instruments this repo already has on its own records. Git first. Since 1 September, 2,147 commits on main; 1,048 carry the chore prefix, which means a hook wrote them, not a hand. Of the rest: 395 feat, 319 fix, 84 docs, 57 comms, 32 spec. Seven build commits for every one that talks to a human.
Then the mail tape, .thetacog/email-sent.ndjson. Since 1 September, 9,461 outbound rows to 776 distinct addresses — about twelve to each. That is not seven hundred weak ties. That is one message repeated twelve times to the same seven hundred people: a broadcast, which is how the seven hundred were found and is also the strong-tie weekend at scale, the same information to the circle that already has it. A weak tie answers; the tape has no column for that. Then the calendar mirror. Twenty-three rows since 1 September. The rows with another human in them: one networking drop-in on 4 September, one seed lunch marked hold, one call whose window was issued and never confirmed, three roadshow dinners marked going, recommended, and alternate, and two AMAs. Against 2,147 commits. A row says where mass landed and nothing about what took it there: hold may be discipline — a term sheet with clawbacks in it is a reason to hold — and the record does not say. It says only that the mass is not there. The room Pfeffer named is the one with almost no mass on it, and the record said so without being asked.
Then the instrument, run on the repo that built it, which is where the shadow got interesting. The last twenty commits were read against the eight things the spec said the work was for: three could be placed with confidence, five could not, and the work sits five blocks from the nearest thing it was declared for. Asked where to move the work, it found nowhere declared to move it to. Asked where the work keeps landing instead, it said money and legal defence — five commits on a lane nobody had named, three of them a benchmark refresh. The placement itself, turn 133: all three panels came back UNMEASURED — the input fell below the floor the placement needs, so no picture was drawn and none is claimed. And underneath both, this month's formal work: 95 properties of the instrument on a ledger, 21 proved and each seen to fail under a deliberate one-token break, 27 guarded by a test, 7 true by construction, 39 measured, 1 refuted with its trace, nothing left unclassified. One measured row said the lens cut a session's false starts before its first edit from 12.3 to 4.1. The randomised test that has run since August on 15 percent of sessions read the same outcome as an experiment: 7.3 false starts without the lens, 9.1 with it. No detectable effect, and the point estimate leans against us. Found while writing that row: the one line that hands a room its paths read from a table that had been empty. It never rendered. Every offline reading had scored the lens by what its lanes declare; no session had ever received it. The lights this repo believed were on had not come on. That is a bug, and it was patched the same day. The point is who found it: not the story, which had said for a month that the lights were on, but the arm.
Seven build commits for every outbound message. One broadcast to seven hundred people, twelve times each. A feature I believed was live that had never rendered. Three empty rooms, found on one day, in three records I did not write, printed at the same size as the wins.
Break it: recompute any of these counts from the same tapes on the same dates and get a different shape — a hand that talked more than it built, or an arm that separated. That breaks this.

Why could you not see it yourself? Not because you are dishonest. Because of a law about records. Every change of state either evicts the prior record or retains it and pays storage for it — Landauer (1961) for the eviction, Bennett (1973) for the cost of keeping. There is no third account. And a record that was evicted is not expensive to recover; it is unpurchasable. The data processing inequality (Cover and Thomas, 2006) says that once a summary has replaced the thing, no later procedure gets back more than the summary carried. Your account of your week is a summary produced by the week. It cannot contain the rooms the week displaced. That is not a moral failing. It is what a summary is.
On the chip this is the cache line that was overwritten: the slot was full, the old line went, and re-reading the new line tells you nothing about the old one. In your head it is the same slot. The room you did not enter was displaced by the commit you made instead, and the commit is what memory is holding when you ask it how the week went. Now the second half. A gap in a record does not stay a gap. It gets filled with the most likely completion — the population average of how weeks like yours go. Pfeffer noticed the same filler at civilisational scale: every religious tradition I know has some account-balancing scheme — heaven, karma, reincarnation — because the world is not fair and the gap has to close with something. The just-world belief is not a naive opinion. It is what a mind does with a gap: fills it with the average outcome, so it can stop watching. It tells you the person who took your room will get theirs later, so you can stop watching, so you can sleep. The engineer's version is the math will make them bend. That is the same belief with a technical accent: it postpones the room to the day the proof is undeniable, and the record shows that day has a way of not being on the calendar either.
The ratchet met the same filler inside its own code and wrote two house rules about it. A guard that reads the constant it guards is not a guard: a check that stays green under its own mutation is a tautology, so every PROVED row has to name the mutation it went red under, and the first version of one of them, on 16 September, had not. That is a rule confirming itself, which is the same comfort in a test file. And withdrawn, never deleted: when a measured number fails a later audit it keeps its rate and its null on the row and loses its interpretation there, in words, dated, because deleting the row would delete the lesson. Pruning is not a crime; it is the law, and the only point is that the pruned list cannot be rebuilt from the pruner. So the shadow is not hidden. It is evicted, then plastered over with the average, and the only account that can hold it is one the actor did not author — git, the mail tape, the calendar, a placement computed from the commit and not from the story about the commit. Open one of those and the plaster comes off in a row.
The just-world belief is not naivety. It is what a mind does with a gap: fills it with the average outcome, so the person who took your room will "get theirs" and you can stop watching. A test that stays green when you break it on purpose is the same comfort in a file.
Break it: produce, from recollection alone and before opening any log, the three rooms you avoided this month, and have the list match the log when you open it. That breaks this.

Here is the question that stalls people who have read Pfeffer and agree with him. If you have spent years opposing power — hierarchy, exploitation, the room where the check is written — then power has become the thing you define yourself against. It is your god by negation. You will never hold it, because holding it would cost you the self that refuses it. So is the cure to become the thing you hate?
No. The cure is to stop scoring power as good or evil at all, and score it the way the book already scores it. In the chapter on why Moloch does not fund the uninsurable, the sentence is about a rogue operator taxed per transaction while the lit market pays once at the underwriting and then transacts at a multiple of his speed: that is not a moral advantage. It is a friction differential. Power is friction. It is the cost of moving a decision through people, per boundary crossing, and it is no more a sin than a cache miss is. You do not assign guilt to a cache miss. You place it, you price it, you route around it or you pay it. The person at the top who looks to you like they have no skill — Kotter's students, in the same talk, were told to learn from exactly that person — has paid a friction bill you have not, and the bill was paid in rooms. Scoring friction deceives nobody. It is the person who moralises power who has to lie — about wanting the room, about why the lunch was held — and the book's rogue operator is exactly the one negotiating trust from scratch every time because his account cannot be read. Friction accounting is what lets the conscience stay where it is: the row is printed, so the lie is unnecessary.
Granovetter's weak tie has a twin in the ratchet's house rules, and the twin says why the lunch matters. Agreement from your own side is style. Agreement from the other side is evidence. Two readings of the same prompt agree because they share a vocabulary; a reading of the prompt agreeing with the room's own record is the only kind that counts. Your friends agreeing with you is same-class. The carrier's actuary agreeing with you is cross-class. One is a weekend; the other is a row. That gives the discomfort a job. A room you flinch from is either a place you declared and never went, or a place you keep going without ever declaring it. The ledger only ever gives you two moves: move the work to a declared cell nothing has landed on, or move the declaration to name the cell the work keeps landing on. At the scale of seventeen days the first arm is where the mass is missing — the lunch, the call, the carrier — and at the scale of the cockpit spec the second arm is what came back: work landing at Fund × Law that nobody declared. Two scales, two arms, one law. Which arm you take, cycle after cycle, is the only thing the instrument records about you. It does not say which arm is right. It says which one you took.
Now the bargain, because it has to clear or none of this is worth the read. Suppose the technology is right. Suppose WHERE really is decidable and re-runnable, the row really is pinned and signed, the account really cannot flatter its author. Then something uncomfortable follows, and it is the whole point: there is nothing left to build around. For years the bypass was the plan — make the instrument so good that the rooms would not be needed, that the world would discover it, that the carrier would come. If the tech is right, that plan is refuted by the tech. The instrument removes every excuse from the operational half, and everything that remains is the judgment half, which is entirely rooms: the actuary who has to agree, the standard-setter who looks like they have no skill, the capital that only cares about capture, the peers who are also competitors. Being right about the tech does not lower the friction bill. It concentrates it, all of it, into the exact places your feet refuse. Not a life in a suit. A list. The record says how long the list is — five items, below — and which are empty, and the alternative has a bill the tape already printed: seven hundred addresses, twelve times, and no row from the other side. That is the filth, and it is where the gold is, because it is the only variable the record leaves you.
And the problems are not solved; they are on the ledger. In this repo, on 17 September, the filth has a list, and every item on it is a row rather than a feeling. First, the feature I told everyone was working: a randomised test read no effect where the earlier numbers read a large one, and the reason is that the feature had never actually been delivered. Second, the fundraising and legal work I keep doing without ever declaring it as the job — five commits on it, none of them on the plan. A declaration is not a press release; it is a lane named to your own instrument, on your own machine, signed with your own key, and the vultures never see it. The only silence that costs is the one kept from yourself, because an undeclared cell is one the envelope cannot read a delta on. Third, the plan itself: five of the eight things I declared the work was for could not be matched to anything I actually did. Fourth, the calendar: the seed lunch left on hold and the carrier call never confirmed, against two thousand commits. Fifth, the broadcast: twelve messages to each of seven hundred addresses, and not one conversation with someone who could sign. What has to be leaned into is that list, in that order, because each item is a room and the record has already said which ones are empty. You give up the bypass. You get the coordinate. The price is the rooms. That is the bargain, and it clears only if the coordinate is worth more to you than the story that you would never have to sit in them.
If the technology is right there is nothing left to build around: the instrument removes every excuse from the operational half, and everything that remains is rooms. Being right does not lower the friction bill. It concentrates it into the exact places your feet refuse. You give up the bypass, you get the coordinate, and the price is the rooms.
Your friends agreeing with you is style. The actuary agreeing with you is a row. One costs a weekend and returns the information you already had; the other costs a lunch you do not want and returns the only kind of agreement a ratchet is allowed to climb.
Break it: show a room you avoided where the cost of entering it was moral rather than frictional — where paying the crossing would have required you to lie, not to sit through it. That breaks this, for that room.

The old growth story worked because you could not check it. Work hard, suffer, and the paper will be worth something. It ran on the same engine as money in the American Gods scene (2019): a note is worth what everyone repeats it is worth, and the repetition is the whole mechanism. Effort-then-reward was a story of that kind. It kept people moving by leaving the mechanics of the reward off the page, and what made it motivating was exactly what made it unfalsifiable: nobody could show you the cell your effort landed in, so nobody could show you that it had landed nowhere. The sweat was real. The hallucination was the exchange rate — the belief that sweat converted to reward at a fixed price nobody could quote. That is act one, the fog, and it is comfortable in the way a blindfold is comfortable — nobody can see you miss.
The better story is not see around corners, and anyone selling that is selling the fog with a chip glued on. The better story is smaller and checkable: the record prints WHERE your work landed against what you declared, and it stops there. It stops because the next question — was that the right target — is undecidable. Rice (1953) closed it: no program can check another program for what it means. In your units: your unit tests are not evidence a carrier can price. The chapter on the chooser puts it in one line: the chip is deterministic, and what it determines is WHERE. It does not determine WHETHER. The hardware hands up the position; the entity standing at the position settles the act. The house rule beneath it: the result is pinned and signed; correctness is never signed. A tool that signed the act would be lying to you about the one thing you cannot outsource. And it is not the scalpel-maker's shrug. A scalpel that washes its hands of WHETHER leaves no record of the hand; this prints the hand — who placed, under which reef, at which coordinate, signed. A weapons manufacturer sells the absence of that row. This sells the row. That is act two, the shadow: the lights are on, the target was yours, and if you chose the wrong target the instrument shows you arriving at it with perfect fidelity. That space is where your disappointment lives. The old story papered it over with you'll get yours. This one leaves it open on purpose, because a reading that could not disappoint you could not inform you either.
Act three is the ease, and here is the claim stated at the size the record allows. You will waste less time, because you are not blind in the fog. As a description of prompts it is already true in this repo: when the lens named the right place a room groped 4.1 times before its first edit, against 12.3 when it named nothing. As a cause it is not yet shown — the randomised arm read no effect, and the paths had never been delivered. So the claim is carried the only honest way the house rules allow: the bar is stated before the read and moves with the number of looks. Pre-registered on 17 September: the arm read on sessions assigned after that date, three outcomes — gropes before the first edit, new-file rate, minutes to the first edit — at 0.05 over three per outcome, session-cluster null, both halves, read when the control arm holds a hundred edited prompts, about six weeks. If the arm separates, the strata were the size of the true effect. If it does not, the affordance as delivered does not change groping, and the row says so at full size. Ease, on this page, is a dated prediction with its falsifier attached. That is the strongest sentence the evidence supports, and it is stronger than a promise because you can watch it fail. It is a target on our own back, on purpose. If the arm reads flat, the sentence on the tombstone is the affordance as delivered did not change groping, which is narrower than the architecture failed, and a carrier can read the difference. A claim with no read date is the one a carrier reads as puffery.
Ease, on this page, is six weeks, three outcomes, and a bar stated before the read. If the arm separates, the strata were the size of the true effect. If it does not, the row says so at full size. A prediction you can watch fail is worth more than a promise you cannot.

An underwriter needs exactly three things from you, and the shadow is the third one. A declared lane — what you said the work was for. A placed record — where the work actually landed, computed from the commit, not from your account of the commit. And the delta between them, printed with its sign. The first is a sentence you write. The second is a row you did not write. The third is the premium. Undeclared drift — mass landing on a cell nobody named — is the lane nobody priced, and the lane nobody priced is where the loss lives. The envelope's second arm is a pricing instrument before it is anything else. Treaties get rewritten after a rupture, on whatever record existed before it; the record that exists before the rupture is the one that gets read after. Logging what the agent said is a diary; a record the agent did not write is a ledger, and only the second one is read in that room. Fine-tuning moves the average; the loss lives in the tail, and the tail is what the carrier prices.
The ease has a unit now too, and it is not a dollar. Wage-minutes is the unit of the ease claim, not of the cover; the cover is priced per agent-year on the invoice, and the nine-figure fine is what the cover is for. The stopwatch is there so that waste less time is a number that can come back wrong. The cost accounting landed this week: every commit carries what it cost in calls, tokens and minutes, with the floors stated in those units; nothing is converted to dollars until a dated, sourced price schedule is signed and locked, and the row says UNPINNED until then. Scaling a production cost into a clearing price is the slip that produced an earlier overreach on this site, and the units are now typed so the compiler rejects the mix. When the randomised arm reads in six weeks, the minutes it moves or does not move will be on that row, in wage-minutes, with the null beside them. That is what waste less time will mean here: a number with a unit, or a row that says it did not move.
So price the room, because a room that is not priced is a feeling. Without a record, the January forms exclude the loss: when the agent gets it wrong, the loss is the deployer's in full, unhedged, and the Act adds up to €15 million or 3 percent of global turnover for a deployer's obligations (Article 99). With a record a carrier can recompute, the same loss becomes a premium and a deductible on a policy the standalone market already writes — up to $25 million at Lloyd's through Armilla, up to $15 million from Mosaic with Munich Re — and the record is licensed at $20 per agent-year. That is the delta between the fog and the ledger, in the underwriter's own units: the whole loss plus a fine, against a licence, a premium and a deductible. The price clears because the carrier cannot price a loss it cannot count, so a countable incident rate is worth the premium it makes possible; the deployer's alternative is not no licence but no cover; the carrier makes the record a condition, so it is bought the way a smoke detector is bought; and a claim that can be recomputed settles without discovery, which is what the carrier is buying. The operator with a record pays once at the underwriting and then transacts at speed; the one without negotiates trust from scratch every time. That friction difference is the clearing mechanism. Underneath it is a unit, because nothing clears without one: the cog, a piece of cognitive work priced by the minutes of a relevant expert's salary it displaces, which pins any task to dollars for buyer and seller alike with no arbitrage between them. The record prices nothing; it is the index. Once the task has a no-arbitrage value and the record supplies how far it swings, the drift is priced the way an option is — which needs exactly those two things and nothing about which way you think it is going. And it runs two ways: on a policy priced on the swing the deployer lowers the premium by lowering the measured swing, the carrier lowers its loss ratio by pricing on the same swing, and the licence is fixed at $20 per agent-year in either direction — nothing on the seller's side is paid for the drift or for hiding it. The unit of cost underneath is the commit, with tokens, minutes and calls that refuse to add to each other; the medians here are 40,079 tokens, 5.33 minutes and 12 calls over 621 commits; the price table is pinned, dated 17 September, to the Bureau of Labor Statistics' May 2025 wages and the model vendors' published rates; and yield — passes over decidable commits — is currently zero on every lane, so every per-pass floor prints UNMEASURED with its reason, which is the honest number. Air Canada paid about eight hundred Canadian dollars in 2024 for what its chatbot said and lost the argument that the chatbot was a separate legal entity; the loss was small and the shape was not.
That is also why the responsibility has to sit where section five left it. A carrier cannot price a product whose vendor claims the target was right; that claim is undecidable and the carrier knows it. A carrier can price a product whose vendor prints where the work landed and hands the choice of target back to the buyer, because then the two halves of the risk are separated: the operational half, on the tape, and the judgment half, on the chooser. A story that kept the responsibility on the tool would be uninsurable by construction. The sloppy buyer with the money is not the customer; their carrier is, and the carrier makes the row a condition of cover — which is how a buyer who would never choose the truth ends up holding it anyway. None of this halts an agent, contains one, or claims safe. It says where the work landed. The measurement is free and open source; installing and running the walk costs nothing and asks nothing of you. Only the attestation layer — the signed row a carrier or a counterparty can hold against you — is licensed. Two thousand commits, one lunch on hold, and an arm that read nothing: three rows this repo can hold against itself, none of them flattering, which is how you know they are rows.
Undeclared drift is the lane nobody priced, and the lane nobody priced is where the loss lives. A vendor who signs the target is uninsurable by construction; a vendor who prints the landing in wage-minutes, with the null beside it, and hands the target back can carry a policy.
Break it: name a carrier that has priced an agent product on the vendor's own statement that the agent chose the right target, with no record the vendor did not author. That breaks this.

The to-do is one gesture and it is uncomfortable, which is the point. Write down, on one line, the three rooms your stomach avoids. Then open your own calendar, your own sent mail, and your own commit log for the last thirty days, and count the rows that landed in each room. Do not use your memory for this; section three says why. If a room has rows, cross it off; you were wrong about yourself, and that is a row too. If a room has none, you have the coordinate. Writing the names down does not demote the build to an excuse. The months of build are the ticket — nobody gets the lunch without a row to bring to it — and the names are what the ticket has not been spent on. Count how many of the seven you swung at. Zero means you nodded, and a nod is the just-world story with better manners. Two means you did what this repo did on 17 September.
