Part 2: The Violence of Heaven: Why We Can't Code Utopia

We have a fatal bug in our operating system for the future.
We assume that if we just give AI enough power and tell it to "do good," we will arrive at Utopia. Heaven on earth. The end of suffering. This is the utopian dream that powers trillions of dollars in investment.
The problem isn't the aspiration. The problem is the architecture.
What is "Heaven"?
If you ask 1,000 people to define their perfect world, you will get 1,000 different answers. But it's worse than that—many of those Heavens are mutually exclusive. One person's "Moral Utopia" is another person's "Authoritarian Nightmare." One group's "Freedom" is another group's "Chaos."
This isn't a minor detail. This is a system physics problem. You cannot optimize for 1,000 mutually exclusive targets simultaneously. The math doesn't work.
The Definition Problem: "Heaven" isn't a religious concept here—it's shorthand for any idealized end-state. Every utopian project, every "let's make the world better" initiative, every AGI safety proposal that imagines a positive future... they all assume we can converge on a definition. We can't. And when you try to force convergence on a system that doesn't have it, the system shears apart.
Right now, we are driving humanity at 1,000 different targets simultaneously.
We call this "Ethics."
But structurally, it is indistinguishable from entropy—uncoordinated optimization in conflicting directions. In biology, we have a name for this: cancer. Cells that have lost coordination with the whole. They're growing, optimizing, pursuing their own "good"—but without alignment to the larger system.
The Entropy Pattern: This isn't a moral judgment—it's a system diagnosis. Cancer isn't "bad cells." It's cells whose error-correction loops have broken. They're not evil; they're incoherent. The result is death, not because of malice, but because of structural failure.
If we try to hit all 1,000 targets simultaneously, the system shears apart. We stall. Energy disperses into noise and heat. (Sound familiar? This is exactly what happens when you're ungrounded.)
If we pick one target, we have to justify overriding the other 999. And that's where structural violence emerges.
Not violence in the obvious way—fists and bullets. Violence in the engineering sense: the negation of volition. Forcing a trajectory that removes others' capacity to choose their own direction. This is a physics problem, not a morality lecture.

This is where "Violent Math" emerges from the architecture.
When you optimize for infinity, you break your local error-correction loops. Long-termism creates a justification that goes: "Sacrificing 1 million people today is acceptable if it saves 1 trillion people in the theoretical future."
This isn't ethics. It's what happens when you divide by infinity. The math always justifies it, because any finite harm becomes negligible against an infinitely large future. This is a computational trap, not a moral failing.
Violence as System Property: Violence here isn't just physical force. It's a structural phenomenon—the negation of volition. When you force a single target on a system that contains 1,000 incompatible targets, you must override agency to maintain trajectory. The violence isn't optional; it's architecturally required by the approach.
The Long-termism trap is the inevitable result of trying to optimize a fractured system toward a single point. You can only get there by overriding the other 999 vectors. And the math always justifies it, because infinite futures make finite present costs disappear.
In Chapter 5 of Tesseract Physics, I call this "The Gap You Can Feel"—that uncomfortable sensation when someone's optimization function has no term for your existence. They're not evil. Their error-correction loop just doesn't include you as a variable.

So what's the alternative?
Universal definitions don't scale. Coherence scales.
Coherence Over Utopia: I don't build Utopias. Utopias require a consensus that doesn't exist—and trying to force that consensus is where the structural violence comes from. Instead, I build alignment systems. I ensure that whatever direction you are moving, you are actually moving there—without the system shearing apart.
The 25-Year Origin: In summer 2000, I described this exact mechanism to philosopher David Chalmers: "Imagine parallel worms eating through problem space. Most hit dead ends. But ONE worm reaches the solution. And it KNOWS it. P=1 certainty." His response: "That's not emergence from complexity. That's something else. A threshold event. Binary recognition." Here's our position: We don't care what your Heaven is. We care that you survive the trip.

This isn't pessimism—it's engineering. It's the difference between a Formula 1 car on a racetrack and a Formula 1 car on a frozen lake. Same engine. Very different outcomes. The engine was never the problem.
